Sean Bergenheim scored with 4:31 left to break a third-period tie, and the Florida Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak in a 3-2 win over the Stars on Sunday. Bergenheim put the Panthers ahead for good when he redirected Colby Robaks drive from the left circle. "I just tried to put my stick down on the ice and he (Robak) found it. It was a really nice play by him," Bergenheim said. The Stars still hold a one-point lead over the Phoenix Coyotes for the second Western Conference wild-card spot. They missed a chance to extend their points lead against a team that has been struggling. "We stopped skating. You cant do that, you have to play a full 60 minutes in these games," Stars forward Jamie Benn said. "We knew it wasnt going to be easy, theyre not going to give us these games. We have to put this one behind us; it was obviously a terrible outcome. We dont want to remember this one." Scottie Upshall and Brandon Pirri also scored for Florida, and. Roberto Luongo made 35 saves and beat Dallas for the first time in five starts. "Myself and also the team got better as the game went on. We had a really strong second half of the game," Luongo said. "Were competitors. Anytime we step on the ice, it doesnt matter what the circumstances are, you want to have that winning mind-set and try to win." Tyler Seguin and Benn had goals for the Stars, and Kari Lehtonen stopped 21 shots. Florida erased a 2-0 deficit on goals by Upshall and Pirri in the second period. The Panthers made it 2-1 when Erik Gudbransons shot was tipped by a Dallas player, hit Upshall and bounced into the net at 8:20 of the second. "These are good games, the league tunes into these games and theyre big," Upshall said. "We have an opportunity here to play for something and those are fun games to play in." Florida tied when Pirri scored with 57 seconds left in the period. Jimmy Hayes slid a pass to Pirri in the slot for a one-timed shot high into net. "Obviously, theyre playing for their lives," Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. "Getting that second one and tying it up was a great momentum boost for us." Dallas took the lead 45 seconds into the game when Benn poked the puck past a defender and then wristed a shot past Luongo for his 33rd goal. Benn, who scored 40 seconds into Saturday nights 5-2 win at Tampa Bay, has three goals in two games. Dallas made it 2-0 just 39 seconds into the middle period when Seguin scored his 36th of the season during a power play. Seguins shot from the left circle went off the stick of a Florida defender and into the net, giving Seguin his fourth goal in four games. The Stars also struggled against Tampa Bay on Saturday, when they nearly blew a three-goal lead before pulling away in the third. "Tough points to lose, it wasnt a good game for us," Seguin said. "No excuses even though it was back to back. We expect better." NOTES: Pirri has a four-game point streak and has 12 points in 15 games. ... Benn has 21 points in 19 games. ... Dallas G Tim Thomas, traded by Florida to the Stars on March 5, didnt play. Thomas has been in just two of the past 10 games. ... In the first period of Mondays game between the Penguins and Sabres, Pittsburghs Tanner Glass accidentally high-sticked a Buffalo player along the boards, then the puck came back to him. He closed in a bit on the net and ripped a shot which Ryan Miller deflected into the corner - there was another Penguin there and a couple of Buffalo players. I am not sure at what point the referees arm was raised, but Fleury raced to the bench for another attacker. Play was then whistled down and Glass received a high-sticking penalty. My question is: had Glass scored on his shot would the goal have counted? Does somehow the intent to blow the whistle factor in here? Thanks for any clarification you can offer, Kerry. erhaps you werent even born in 1987 but a similar incident happened to yours truly during Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs that year at the Montreal Forum in the hotly contested Battle of Quebec between the Canadiens and the Nordiques. I raised my arm for a delayed penalty and got caught up watching the follow-up action to where the infraction had occurred and while the "offending team" had possession of the puck. Seeing that my arm was raised to call a penalty with his team in possession of the puck the offending team goalie raced out of his crease for an extra attacker. A change of puck possession with no whistle blown resulted in an attack toward the unguarded cage and caused the goalie to throw on the brakes half way to his players bench. Through instinct and a quick replay in my brain I recognized that the offending team had possession of the puck at the time of the infraction and I immediately blew the whistle to assess the penalty. It was a minor embarrrassment for me but no damage was done as result of my slow whistle.

The referee remained focused on Ennis to determine if an injury had resulted as the Buffalo player grabbed his chin. In that moment of time the shot on goal was taken by Tanner Glass of the Penguins. As Ryan Miller made the save and steered the rebound to the corner behind his net Marc-Andre Fleury had already bolted from his net for an extra attacker! The referee, like me, recognized that the offending team had puck possession following the infraction and stopped play to assess the penalty. If the shot by Glass had gotten past Miller and entered the net the goal would immediately have been disallowed and the penalty assessed as per rule 78.5 (xi)—During the delayed calling of a penalty, the offending team cannot score unless the non-offending team shoots the puck into their own net. This shall mean that a deflection off an offending player or any physical action by an offending player that may cause the puck to enter the non-offending teams goal, shall not be considered a legal goal. Play shall be stopped before the puck enters the net (wherever possible) and the signaled penalty assessed to the offending team. (xii) When the Referee deems the play has been stopped, even if he had not physically had the opportunity to stop play by blowing his whistle. The answer to your question John is clearly found in rule 78.5. Putting aside any minor embarrassment a referee might feel for not blowing his whistle at the appropriate time, no goal can result on a delayed penalty or a delayed off-side call (even after the attacking team has tagged up at the blue line) unless the non-offending team shoots the puck into their own goal.
