Julia Mancuso gave herself a shot to win yet another Olympic medal on Monday morning in Sochi, taking the lead in womens super-combined after the first of two runs.

Mancuso stayed true to her reputation as a skier who rises to the occasion in big events, crossing nearly a half-second faster than all other competitors in the downhill run at Rosa Khutor. Mancusos time was one minute, 42.68 seconds. The Reno, Nev., native has three career Olympic medals, including a silver in the super-combi at the Vancouver Olympics. The 29-year-old has struggled this season, with her last World Cup podium in March 2013, . She will now hope to fend off skiers who are better in the slalom, in a run that will take place at 6 a.m. ET. At the very least, shes laid claim to top contender status for Wednesdays downhill. The rest of the top 5 after the first run includes some of the best womens skiers of recent years: Lara Gut of Switzerland is in second, followed by Tina Maze of Slovenia, Anna Fenninger of Austria, and defending Olympic champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany. Nicole Hosp of Austria, 2006 Olympic silver medallist in the slalom, still has a shot at the podium after an eighth place showing in the downhill. Marie-Michèle Gagnon, the lone Canadian in the event, sits in 21st place. Gagnon generally does not compete in the downhill during the World Cup season. She has four top 5 finishes in the slalom within the past year, and will need that kind of performance in the second run and some breaks elsewhere to be a factor. The 24-year-old Lac-Etchemin, Que., native won a super-combined event in January, but it was comprised of a super-G and slalom.
