导出博客文章TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State sputtered offensively through the first half and
lost another quarterback to injury in the second.Good thing the Sun Devils have
the most prolific kicker in college football history.Zane Gonzalez kicked three
field goals to become the NCAAs all-time leader and Arizona State grinded out a
23-20 victory over UCLA Saturday night despite losing back-up quarterback Brady
White to a right leg injury.Youre talking about a monumental accomplishment
there, Arizona State coach Todd Graham said of Gonzalez. Im proud of Zane. Thats
huge.Gonzalez hit from 35, 23 and 46 yards to reach 89 career field goals ,
passing Florida States Dustin Hopkins, who had 88 from 2009-12.Arizona State
(5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) needed all of those after struggling offensively in the first
half and watching White limp off with a right leg injury in the fourth
quarter.Making his first career start with Manny Wilkins out, White had some
shaky moments, but led the Sun Devils on four scoring drives in the second
half.He finished with 179 yards passing and a touchdown with an interception,
but couldnt put any weight on his leg after being injured in the fourth
quarter.Hopefully, well get good news on Brady, but it doesnt look good, Graham
said.UCLA (3-3, 1-2) had a strong defensive game, holding the high-scoring Sun
Devils to 275 total yards.Offensively, the Bruins had trouble getting out of
their own way.UCLA had four turnovers and missed on two scoring opportunities in
the first half, when JJ Molson missed a pair of field goals. The worse news could
come from the training table.Quarterback Josh Rosen left in the first half with
a right leg injury , but returned in the third quarter to throw touchdown passes
to Jordan Lasley and Nate Iese .The sophomore was unable to come back after
injuring his right shoulder on a hard hit in the fourth quarter. He threw for
400 yards on 24-of-43 passing with an interception.Josh is beat up. He is beat
up, UCLA coach Jim Mora said. He has taken some horrible hits because we cant
protect for him.It didnt help that the Bruins couldnt run the ball at all,
finishing with minus-1 yard rushing on 23 carries. With no running threat to
worry about, Arizona State was able to ramp up its pressure on Rosen, repeatedly
knocking him to the ground. We cant run the football at all, Mora said. When you
cant run the football and you have to throw every down then they can pin their
ears back and come after you, which they do. Unfortunately we couldnt protect
tonight, either.THE TAKEAWAYUCLA: The Bruins struggled offensively most of the
night even when Rosen was in and they could be in bigger trouble if the
sophomore is out for an extended time. UCLA also must find some way to get its
run game rolling or there could be more games like this.Arizona State: The Sun
Devils moved into a tie atop the Pac-12 South with Colorado and Utah, but need
to get Wilkins back. Arizona States defense gave up more big plays in the
passing game, but came up with the big stops when it counted.ZANES RECORDNot
only did Gonzalez break the NCAA record , his final kicked ended up being the
game-winner. The senior had to give it a little body english, but the 46-yard
kick early in the fourth quarter curled just inside the upright. It wasnt exactly
the best kick; I was pretty nervous about it, looking at it the whole way,
Gonzalez said. It was a perfect snap, a perfect hold and I didnt hit it the
best. I was watching it the whole way and (holder Matt Haack) was hitting me on
the back.UP NEXTUCLA plays at Washington State.Arizona State plays at No. 21
Colorado next Saturday.

speechless." The Indians are roaring toward October. Giambi belted a two-run,
pinch-hit homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give Cleveland a shocking
5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, keeping the Indians up with
the lead pack in the AL wild-card race.

The teams, and a few thousand fans, waited nearly four hours from the 7:05
scheduled start time before an announcement was made shortly before 11 p. RIO DE
JANEIRO -- After a 12-year professional boxing career, Hassan NDam dreamed of
returning to the Olympics and winning the gold medal that eluded him in
Athens.Instead, NDam is headed home with a bitter lesson in the amateur version
of his sport.NDam was ousted in his opening bout in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday
night, losing a unanimous decision to Brazils Michel Borges. The 32-year-old
NDam, who held versions of two pro middleweight titles, is the biggest name
among the three professional boxers who joined the Rio field earlier this
summer. Although the French-Cameroonian veteran appeared to land cleaner shots
in the final two rounds, Borges got the decision in his hometown with a quick
start and the wild support of a crowd that roared for his every punch.Im very
disappointed about this, NDam said. Hes a good fighter, but I think Im better
than him. I took too much time to come into the fight, but I lost the
fight.NDams stunning loss buried any fears of an Olympic tournament dominated by
professionals in Rio.Lightweight Carmine Tommasone, who has never fought
professionally outside of his native Italy, became the first pro boxer to win an
Olympic fight in the morning session at Riocentro Pavilion 6, beating Mexicos
Lindolfo Delgado.Thailand lightweight Amnat Ruenroeng, the third pro in the
field, fights Sunday. When the International Boxing Association (AIBA) decided
earlier this year to allow any boxer to attempt to qualify for the Olympics,
many observers condemned the move, envisioning a bizarre event with elite
prizefighters seriously hurting teenage amateurs. But every big-name boxer in the
world passed on Rio, citing everything from injury worries to the Olympic-style
sports peculiar demands in a multi-fight tournament featuring daily weigh-ins
and three-round bouts. The last factor doomed NDam, who acknowledged feeling out
his opponent in an inactive first round. In the pros, thats a smart strategy. In
the amateur game, the fight is already one-thirdd over.ddddddddddddI did it too
slow, NDam said. Im not happy. I came too far for this competition. I took too
much time from my professional career. I have no regrets, but I took too long to
get into the fight.NDam had hoped to better his performance in the loaded
Olympic middleweight tournament in 2004, when the amateur game still used the
now-discarded punch-counting system to determine winners. NDam beat future Irish
world middleweight champion Andy Lee, but lost a decision to Russias Gaydarbek
Gaydarbekov, who went on to beat Gennady Golovkin for the middleweight gold
medal in Athens. Many boxing experts predicted wild mismatches when pros joined
the Olympic qualification process this summer -- and perhaps it would have
happened if the likes of Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez had signed up.But the
amateur game presents challenges that can be just as problematic as a Wladimir
Klitschko jab.Its very different, Tommasone said. I (had to adjust) for a
three-round Olympic fight. I usually prepare for a 10-round, 12-round (fight). I
had to win the match with intelligence. The 32-year-old Tommasone thoroughly
controlled his first Olympic fight, trouncing the 21-year-old Delgado with
activity and precision. Tommasone fights as a 126-pound professional
featherweight, but chose the 132-pound lightweight division for the Olympics,
likely making it easier to deal with daily weigh-ins.Tommasone, nicknamed Mr.
Wolf after Harvey Keitels problem-solving character in Pulp Fiction, barely
missed qualification for the Beijing Games. He eagerly seized the Italian
federations invitation to qualify last month in Venezuela. The Olympics are a
dream for every athlete, and for me, it is wonderful, Tommasone said. When I
learned that I could qualify, I wanted to do it immediately. It was my
dream.---Online:AP Summer Games website:
