Manny Machado in uniform and on the field.San Diego announced its $300
million

10-year contract with the All-Star infielder on Thursday, more than two days
after the deal was agreed to.Machado will be introduced Friday morning at spring
training in Peoria, Arizona. Manager Andy Green said he hopes to get the
26-year-old superstar on the field for an afternoon workout. The agreement, the
largest for a free agent in big league history, allows Machado to opt out after
the 2023 season, a point at which he will have received $150 million and be 31
years old.“Manny Machado is a generational talent, and we’re ecstatic that he’s
chosen to spend his prime years in a San Diego Padres uniform,” Padres executive
chairman Ron Fowler and general partner Peter Seidler said in a joint statement.
“This momentous agreement speaks volumes to the direction of our organization,
as well as our commitment to bringing a World Series championship to the Friar
Faithful and the City of San Diego.”Machado gets a $20 million signing bonus,
payable within 30 days of the deal’s approval by the commissioner’s office, $10
million this season and $30 million in each of the remaining seasons. Machado is
a Florida resident, and the signing bonus will not be subject to income tax in
California, which has a top rate of 12.3 percent.Machado can pick six teams
annually he can’t be traded to without his consent. He gets a hotel suite on
road trips and has the right to purchase premium tickets at Petco Park. His deal
is the second-largest in baseball history behind the $325 million, 13-year
contract outfielder Giancarlo Stanton agreed to with Miami before the 2015
season. To make room for Machado on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred
right-hander Dinelson Lamet to the 60-day injured list.General manager A.J.
Preller said Machado “is one of the truly elite players in baseball and impacts
the game on both sides of the ball. The resume that Manny has built at such a
young age puts him in an exclusive club of big-league talent, and we feel
fortunate to have the support of Ron, Peter and the entire ownership group to
make this deal possible.”The GM called it “a landmark signing” and added that
the organization believes Machado “is the right player at the right time for us.
His combination of youth, experience and ability makes him a perfect fit for the
Padres both now and in the future as we work to build a perennial contender at
the major league level.”Machado is expected to fill the team’s gaping need at
third base. He began last year with Baltimore, was traded to the Los Angeles
Dodgers after the All-Star break and struck out to end the World Series loss to
Boston.Machado hit .297 last year and set career bests with 37 homers and 107
RBIs. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, he has a .282 career
average with 175 homers and 513 RBIs in seven big league seasons. He caused a
stir during the NL Championship Series last October when he failed to run out a
grounder and later said: “Obviously I’m not going to change, I’m not the type of
player that’s going to be ‘Johnny Hustle’ and run down the line and slide to
first base.” Pache continues his strong offensive start to the season with a
1-for-4 performance. He now has a .998 OPS on the season."(9-5) Charlotte

the welcome back to Gwinnett that Kyle Wright was hoping for as the recently
optioned pitcher lasted just four innings while surrendering five runs and
striking out just two. Wright gave up all five runs in a very rough first inning
that culminated in back-to-back homers by the Knights. After that first inning,
Kyle found his groove and just allowed a pair of singles the following three
innings. The trio of Andres Santiago, Elian Leyva, and Corbin Clouse combined to
blank the Knights the following five innings while striking out six, and walking
two. Unfortunately for them, the offense could not mount a big enough comeback
before ultimately falling to the Knights 5-4.Travis Demeritte drove in the first
run of the game for Gwinnett with a sacrifice fly in the second inning that
scored Adam Duvall while a single by Ryan LaMarre drove in Alex Jackson to close
the gap to 5-2. Gwinnett went on to score two more runs in the five inning -
highlighted by an Austin Riley single that drove in Rafael Ortega to close the
gap to 5-4 but that was all that Gwinnett could muster. (6-5) Mississippi Braves

struggled with his control by walking three over 4.2 innings before hitting what
appears to be the pitch count cap (~75 pitches) that all starters are being held
to. Even without his best command - Ian still struck out five (10.4 K/9) and
gave up just one unearned run while lowering his ERA to 2.08 on the season which
shows his lights out stuff - but he now has surrendered 8 walks on the season
(5.5 BB/9). Philip Pfeifer came in relief and gave up an earned run over 2.1
innings of work. Jason Hursh finished out the game with two perfect innings
where he struck out one while collecting his first save of the season.
Mississippi trailed most of the game, actually, as they were blanked until
Cristian Pache took matters into his own hands and homered to left - his first
of the season. Daniel Lockhart put Mississippi up the following inning with his
first homer of the season as well - a solo shot that extended the lead to 3-1.
C.J. Alexander’s rough start to the season continued tonight as he went 0-for-3
and lowered his OPS on the season to a meager .485. Coming into the season as a
fast riser in the organization, C.J. has run into his first real rough stretch
of games during his short professional career. It was only a matter of time
before he ran into one and it’s how he responds to this that really sets the
tone for his path. Daniel Lockhart, son of Keith, went 1-for-4 with a homer, and
increased his OPS to .833 on the season. (6-8) Florida Fire Frogs 5, (4-10)

a night with the likes of Kyle Wright, and Ian Anderson on the mound - it was
Hayden Deal who turned in the most impressive performance by surrendering two
runs over six innings of work. The two earned runs are actually the most runs
he’s surrendered in a game this season which shows how impressive of a start
he’s had. While he hasn’t had the strikeout rate you would like to see from a 24
year old in A+ ball, his command has not wavered - sporting a 2.6 BB/9 rate
while allowing opponents to hit just .158 off of him. Brandon S. White came into
the game in the seventh and pitched two perfect innings while striking out four.
That’s five scoreless outings in a row to start the season for Brandon. Sean
McLaughlin worked the ninth and picked up his first save of the season. The
Florida offense was not particularly dynamic as they were limited to three hits
- highlighted by a three run triple by Kevin Josephina in the five run seventh
inning. It’s been a pretty tough offensive start of the season for Florida, who
didn’t have a single hitter with an OPS over .800 following the game but they
are still just two games below .500 because of their strong pitching. (6-7)

in Rome, Georgia tonight. Jose Olague took the rough loss while allowing just
one earned run while going six innings. It wasn’t easy, as Jose allowed nine
hits of which ONE was an extra-base hit, but he got the job done. Alan Randel,
Dilmer Mejia, and Lukas Young four innings where they surrendered a combined one
unearned run while striking out five and walking zero.Outside of Justin Dean the
offense really struggled - scoring just one run because of fielding error by the
Fireflies first baseman that allow Greg Cullen to score. Trey Harris went
1-for-4 and is off to a fast start - sporting a 1.048 OPS through 13
games.
