The St. Louis Cardinals placed third baseman Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain on Thursday.Carpenter will also miss next weeks All-Star Game. He had a similar injury in 2012 and missed a month of action with a strained right side.The Cardinals infield is becoming rapidly depleted. Third baseman Jhonny Peralta left Tuesdays game and was unavailable to play Wednesday because of discomfort in the same thumb he had surgery on in March.
