导出博客文章RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police investigating reports that American swimmer Ryan Lochte
and three of his teammates were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi so far have found
little evidence supporting the account, and say the swimmers were unable to
provide key details in police interviews.A police official with knowledge of the
investigation told The Associated Press that police cannot find their taxi
driver or witnesses. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the
investigation is ongoing.Lochtes attorney, Jeff Ostrow, said there was no
question the robbery happened and that Lochte had 24-hour security hired after
the incident. He had been staying in his hotel room and intended to go back to
the U.S. soon. This happened the way he described it, Ostrow said.According to
statements from Lochte and the United States Olympic Committee, the swimmers
were returning to the athletes village by taxi after a night out at the French
Olympic teams hospitality house in the Rodrigo de Freitas area in the upscale
south zone of the city. The outing was several hours after Olympic swimming
ended Saturday night at the Rio Games.Traveling with Lochte were Gunnar Bentz,
Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen. Lochte swam in two events at the Rio Games,
winning gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. He is a 12-time Olympic
medalist. The group did not call police, authorities said, and officers began
investigating once they saw media reports in which Lochtes mother spoke about
the robbery. Police interviewed Lochte and one other swimmer, who said they had
been intoxicated and could not remember what type and color of taxi they rode in
or where the robbery happened, the police official said. The swimmers also could
not say what time the events occurred.Later in the day, Lochte described the
incident to NBCs Today show .We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys
came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge
and they pulled us over, Lochte said. They pulled out their guns, they told the
other swimmers to get down on the ground -- they got down on the ground. I
refused, I was like we didnt do anything wrong, so -- Im not getting down on the
ground. And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead
and he said, `Get down, and I put my hands up, I was like `whatever. He took our
money, he took my wallet -- he left my cellphone, he left my credentials.Word of
the robbery initially created confusion between Olympic and U.S. officials. An
International Olympic Committee spokesman at first said reports of the robbery
were absolutely not true, then reversed himself, apologized and said he was
relying on initial information from the USOC that was wrong.Lochte told USA
Today that he and his teammates didnt initially tell the U.S. Olympic officials
about the robbery because we were afraid wed get in trouble.Scott Leightman, a
spokesman for USA Swimming, said the organization has no further comment and
referred back to a statement issued Sunday by the USOC that briefly described
the robbery and said that all four swimmers were safe and cooperating with
authorities. The incident got attention in part because of fears around street
crime at the games. Athletes and visitors have been told to use caution around
the Olympics. Street crime was a major concern of Olympic organizers, and Brazil
deployed 85,000 soldiers and police to secure the games, twice as many as
Britain used during the 2012 London Olympics.Authorities are treating the
swimmers as victims and continuing to investigate, looking for security footage
at the French hospitality house and nearby gas stations to build a timeline of
the night. Security footage from the athletes village obtained by police shows
the swimmers arriving at 6:56 a.m. on Sunday morning, the official said.Rio
police commonly struggle to obtain information while investigating street crimes
in Brazil as they encounter dozens of robberies a day in the violence-ridden
city and lack the resources to get to the bottom of every case. Many such crimes
dont even get reported by victims.Fake police stops like the one reported by
Lochte happen in Rio, but are not common in that area, police say. They are
typically a bigger problem in the poorer cities where police are less
present.Lochte signed a statement on Monday confirming the facts he provided,
his attorney said.Ryan was a hundred percent cooperative and fully available
when they reached out to us for an interview, Ostrow said. He added: It doesnt
behoove Ryan and anyone else to make up a story.

Stadium for the first time when Everton travel to Southampton for Sundays
Premier League meeting live on Sky Sports. The Dutchman raised eyebrows when he
swapped sixth-placed Southampton for the 11th-placed Toffees in the summer,
signing a three-year contract at Goodison Park after two years on the south
coast.Everton sit five points ahead of Southampton after the first three months
of the new campaign, but did Koeman make the right call? We weigh up the cases
for and against with an expert verdict from Matt Le Tissier… FORKoeman cited
Evertons ambition as the main factor behind his decision, and while summer
spending did not come close to the mooted £100m figure, there was evidence of
new owner Farhad Moshiris intentions with the £28m signing of Yannick Bolasie
from Crystal Palace. Everton manager Ronald Koeman greets Manchester City boss
Pep Guardiola That deal, by way of contrast, was worth nearly twice as much as
Southamptons club-record move for Sofiane Boufal, and it highlighted the
difference in financial firepower that convinced Koeman to swap the south coast
for Merseyside.Everton were frustrated in their efforts to sign Moussa Sissoko
and Lucas Perez, among others, but Koeman is expected to receive more backing
from Moshiri in January. Indeed, he has already expressed an interest in
Manchester Uniteds Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay - targets that would have been
out of reach at his former club. Its not just about signings, either. From Luke
Shaw and Adam Lallana to Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama, Koeman was
powerless to stop a string of key players from departing St Marys during his
time at Southampton. It was far from ideal, and while Everton did lose John
Stones to Manchester City this summer, the £50m deal suited both parties, and
their success in resisting Chelseas efforts to sign Romelu Lukaku was the kind
of strong statement Koeman had been craving. The Belgian is one of the Premier
Leagues finest strikers. Southampton simply dont have anyone like him. Romelu
Lukaku has impressed under Ronald Koeman this season Koeman also has plenty of
room for improvement in his new environment. The upshot of guiding Southampton
to a sixth-placed finish last season was that it would have been a massive task
to continue their progression. But while there were suspicions that the Saints
had hit their ceiling, there was real scope for improvement at Everton. Its not
been a straightforward start and performances have been mixed, but the Toffees
are level on points with sixth-placed Manchester United, five ahead of
Southampton and well within reach of the European places. Sky Sports Black

AGAINSTEverton boast more spending power than Southampton, but Koeman has left
behind a club who had mastered the transfer market. The Saints ability to
effectively replace key players with cheaper alternatives allowed them to defy
the odds season after season, with Oriol Romeus recent emergence the latest
success story. Ronald Koeman guided Southampton to a sixth-placed finish last
season Everton hope the appointment of former Leicester recruitment guru Steve
Walsh as their director of football will help them establish the same kind of
system, but its not guaranteed, and Everton missed out on a number of targets
during the summer.ddddddddddddIt could take time to make things work, whereas at
Southampton the building blocks were already in place. The same logic can be
applied to the argument that Everton have more room to improve. Koeman may have
struggled to match last years sixth-placed finish at Southampton, but he had
nurtured stability there. At Everton, on the other hand, he inherited a team in
disarray after Roberto Martinezs tenure. Theres money to spend, but its still a
challenging rebuilding job. Everton 1-1 Swansea There is also an argument that
Koeman might have been better off building on his impressive work at Southampton
and waiting for a bigger offer. Everton are a prestigious club with a proud
history, of course, but the move was seen as a sideways step in many quarters.
Could another year at St Marys have opened other doors?Koeman has made no secret
of his ambition to manage his former club Barcelona, but starting over at
another middling Premier League club might not be seen as the best way to go
about building his CV. By leaving Southampton, Koeman also missed an opportunity
to have another crack at the Europa League.MATT LE TISSIERS VERDICTI said at the
time that I was surprised that he almost made a backwards step. I think its
going to be tougher for him at Everton than he thought. No disrespect to Everton
but I thought he could have got a bigger move given the great work he did at
Southampton. Le Tiss predicts... Find out what Le Tiss is tipping up at 40/1 for
Monaco v Tottenham here. Having said that, I think it would be too early for him
to regret moving. Theres still plenty of time for the investment, assuming it is
there. You can understand why he went, with there being more money for him to
attract players. I think its going to be tougher for him at Everton than he
thought. Matt Le Tissier on Ronald Koeman Id expect them to invest in January
and the summer as I think he wanted to assess his squad first. If he doesnt
spend big then I think that might be a sign that he has been sold down the river
a bit.Its been a decent start but hes come across plenty of bumps in the
road.HAVE YOUR SAY Also See: Koeman: Everton start was flat WATCH: Premier
