导出博客文章SAN DIEGO -- It was a rough year for the San Diego Padres, and things will
probably get worse before they improve. The Padres are missing the playoffs for
the 10th straight season and finished last in the NL West at 68-94.It was the
Padres sixth straight losing season. One of their owners, Ron Fowler, doesnt
think theyll even be .500 for two more years.Their general manager, A.J.
Preller, who is deep into a rebuilding mode, was suspended for 30 days without
pay by MLB for failing to disclose required medical information when they traded
All-Star Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox.Despite the embarrassing and
unprecedented punishment, the Padres are sticking by Preller, who gambled and
lost with a win-now approach in 2015 before making massive changes during this
season. Were well aware that our building process is going to take a while, but
its exciting at the same time, first-year manager Andy Green said. Here are some
things to take away from the Padres season:REBIULDING MODE: The Padres are
retrenching with youth after failing to win with several veterans obtained in a
wild spree of trades and signings after the 2014 season. They loaded up then
with Matt Kemp, Justin and Melvin Upton, James Shields, Wil Myers, Derek Norris
and Craig Kimbrel, and still didnt have a winning season. Only Myers, a
first-time All-Star, and Norris remain. Justin Upton left as a free agent after
last season and Kimbrel was traded to Boston. Kemp, Melvin Upton and Shields
were traded this season in a salary dump. With just more than a week left in the
season, they brought up catcher Austin Hedges, infielder Carlos Asuaje and
outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe, the core players who led Triple-A
El Paso to the Pacific Coast League title. Preller also spent tens of millions
of dollars on international signings.WIL MYERS: Converted from the outfield to
first base, Myers got the healthy, full season he desired. He got to play in the
All-Star Game in his own ballpark and finished the year with 28 homers, 94 RBI
and 28 stolen bases. Slowed by injuries the previous two seasons, he played in
157 games. He went through stretches where he was outstanding, Green said. Wil
has many more steps out in front of him where he can be as good as he possibly
can be. He is from a base stealing perspective substantially better than hes
ever been in his career. Never been a real big part of his game at the major
league level. Theres been a lot of work put in at first base. He does some
things that are very unique over there because of his athleticism. Hes a Gold
Glove first baseman and offensively I think if he stays married to his approach
he can be as dominant as anybody in the game.HUNTER RENFROE: The teams
first-round draft pick in 2013, the outfielder showed his raw power by hitting
four home runs and driving in 14 runs in his first 11 games. He hit his first
career homer off Madison Bumgarner; drove in seven runs in one game with his
first career grand slam and a three-run homer; and became the first batter to
hit a home run onto the roof of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in
the left-field corner at Petco Park.I think its very exciting for the Padres and
also just for the city of San Diego to see something like that, Myers said. Ive
been nothing but impressed.RYAN SCHIMPF: The 28-year-old rookie infielder showed
a crazy propensity for extra-base hits, with 20 home runs, 17 doubles and five
triples among his 60 hits.I waited a long time to get here and I tried to
prepare in the offseason and during the season like I was in the big leagues and
expecting to get here at some point, he said. Once I got here, I just tried to
be me and tried to relax as much as possible.CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT: The Padres
are flirting with having him pitch and play outfield as well as play catcher. No
team has really tried to deploy a guy in that capacity probably ever when you
consider those three dynamics, Green said. The arm works at 96 (mph). ... Well
run as far down that road as his arm will allow us to. I dont know if were
firmly committed or married to that but its worth exploring at this point.

the Chiefs (3-0-0). Luke Harrison spoiled Garrett Hughsons shutout bid with a
power-play goal at 13:17 of the third period. The Spokane goaltender finished
with 28 saves, including a Brandon Fushimi penalty shot in the second period
that would have tied the game 1-1.

Foster Jersey . LUCIE, Fla.ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Matt Moore pitched like
an All-Star on the day he became one. Moore won his 13th game this season, Luke
Scott and Evan Longoria hit back-to-back homers, and the surging Tampa Bay Rays
completed a four-game sweep by beating the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Thursday.
"Truly an All-Star performance," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "This is like
wrapping it all into a nice little package." Moore (13-3), who was added to the
AL All-Star team Thursday after initially being left off, gave up three runs,
three hits, two walks and had 10 strikeouts over 7 1-3 innings in winning his
fifth straight start and setting a team record for victories before the All-Star
break. "It means a lot," Moore said. "Im ecstatic about being part of the
festivities and being at the game with the best players in the game." Moore said
the best part came after talking about his All-Star addition in Maddons office.
"Opened up the door and everybody was waiting there with waters and beers to
celebrate," Moore said. Moore is taking the spot of Texas right-hander Yu
Darvish, who went on the disabled list this week due to a strained trapezius
muscle. Two of the runs charged to Moore scored when reliever Alex Torres gave
up a two-run single in the eighth to Joe Mauer that cut the Twins deficit to
4-3. Jake McGee got his first save pitching a scoreless ninth. Scott and
Longoria hit solo shots in a span of three pitches off Mike Pelfrey (4-7) as the
Rays took a 3-1 lead in the sixth. Longoria, bothered recently by plantar
fasciitis, stopped a career-high stretch of 14 games without an extra base hit.
Rookie Wil Myers had three hits and two RBIs for Tampa Bay, which climbed to a
season-best 13 games over .500 with its eighth straight victory. The
second-place Rays also improved to 10-1 during a stretch of 14 consecutive games
against the Twins, Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros — teams with the three
worst records in the American League. "Its been pretty special," Maddon said.
"Its simple, age-tested formula. We pitched well, we caught it and got some
clutch hits. Theres a lot of belief within the group.dddddddddddd" Pelfrey
allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings. The Twins have has lost 11 of
12, including five straight. Brian Dozier got the Twins first hit off Moore when
he lined a double with two outs in the sixth down the left-field line that just
got past the reach of Longoria at third base. Dozier then scored to tie it at 1
on Jamey Carrolls run-scoring single. The run ended Moores scoreless streak at
22 1-3 innings. The Twins struck out six times and had only one well hit ball, a
third-inning fly near the warning track in centre by Aaron Hicks through five
innings. The lone baserunner during the stretch came when Mauer drew a two-out
walk in the fourth. "Thats a heck of a pitching staff over there," Minnesota
manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Moore was really good with filthy stuff and all
the guys they brought out threw the ball really well, but weve still got to put
the ball in play better than we did the last couple of days, and that really
affected the outcomes of games." The Twins struck out 19 times in Wednesday
nights 4-3, 13-inning loss. Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead on Myers broken-bat RBI
single in the third. Myers extended the lead to 4-1 with a seventh-inning
run-scoring single. The teams started the series finale just over 12 hours after
Wednesday nights 4-hour, 47-minute marathon. A number of regulars, including
Tampa Bays Ben Zobrist, Desmond Jennings and Yunel Escobar, along with
Minnesotas Justin Morneau and Ryan Doumit were not in the starting lineups.
Gardenhire said Morneau was sore after playing in Wednesday nights game, but was
available off the bench. NOTES: Rays RHP Alex Cobb, struck in the right ear by a
liner hit by Kansas Citys Eric Hosmer on June 15, underwent a concussion test
Wednesday and feels the results will be positive. He could throw batting
practice for the first since getting hurt Sunday. ... The Twins placed LHP Caleb
Thielbar on the bereavement list and recalled RHP Michael Tonkin from Triple-A
Rochester. It was annouced Tuesday that Thielbar would be leaving the team
following the death of his grandmother.
