SAO PAULO, Brazil -- McLaren ended a disappointing year with a strong result at the Brazilian Grand Prix, giving the British team an important boost ahead of the 2014 Formula One season.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said 2014 has already started for McLaren, and it was important to finish "a long, hard and disappointing" season with the teams "best grand prix of the year." Jenson Button finished fourth at Interlagos for McLarens best result of 2013, and teammate Sergio Perez had a remarkable sixth-place finish after starting 19th. They hadnt finished higher than fifth heading into Sao Paulo. "This is a great way to end the year, and now our focus turns squarely to 2014," said Button, who started 14th at the Brazilian GP. "McLaren is an incredibly strong and powerful organization and, believe me, we will fight back." The finish in Brazil also meant McLaren became the first team in F1 history to have both cars classified in every race of the season. In addition, Button became the first British driver to race in 247 grands prix, surpassing the record of David Coulthard. "Undoubtedly, that was our best grand prix of the year," Whitmarsh said. "Its frustrating to have to say that after a race in which our drivers finished only fourth and sixth, but its also true." It was the first time in decades that McLaren drivers failed to reach the podium in a season. Button ended ninth in the drivers standings and Perez was only 11th. "2013 has been a long, hard and disappointing year," Whitmarsh said, adding that the team is already working on incorporating the new rule changes for next season. "Formula One is a relentlessly demanding sport, and next seasons new regulations are already presenting all the teams with a daunting array of technical challenges," he said. "For quite some time weve been working extremely hard on those technical challenges, and our focus will be unstinting and unwavering from now onwards, throughout the winter. "In other words, the 2014 season starts this evening," Whitmarsh said after Sundays race. Teams will have to switch from 2.4-litre V8 engines to a 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged unit near year, a move that will demand significant changes in the design of cars. McLaren will also have a new driver next year as Perez will be replaced by rookie Kevin Magnussen of Denmark. "Ive learned so much from everyone at McLaren," said Perez, who is still without a ride for next year. "The best team Ive ever raced with, and I wish every single one of them all the best for the future. I wish Jenson and Kevin all the best for the future." Next season McLaren wont have sponsor Vodafone, which was a partner for seven years.

They either involve a horrific 2003 crash in which his car flipped several times and slid forever through the grass on its roof, or many different ways hed come up empty racing for a win. Finally, he has a victory that tops all those other disappointments. "I have such a love-hate relationship with this race track. We always run good here, but I always doggone flip or wreck or hit hard or something," Sadler said in Victory Lane. "Every autograph session, everywhere I go, everybody always reminds me of the flip I had down the backstraighaway here. Now maybe they can ask me about winning here." Sadler won a three-lap shootout to the checkered flag in the Nationwide Series race. The race Saturday was stopped for a little more than nine minutes to clean the track following a six-car accident that began when Jeremy Clement was turning into an outside wall and his car shot back into traffic. Sadler reflected on many of his previous races during the stoppage. "Under the red flag, I was playing all these scenarios in my head," Sadler said. "Really, how many races Ive lost in the last couple laps not making the right decisions." There were three laps remaining on the restart, and Sadler had to throw several blocks to hold off a charge from the pack of traffic behind him. It was the 10th Nationwide Series victory of Sadlers career, first at Talladega, and first win since 2012. "We just stayed to the bottom and stuck to our guns," Sadler said of his strategy. "We made the right blocks at the right time." "I was disappointed last year we werent able to do it. "We couldnt keep the JR Motorsports winning streak alive, but theres a lot of races left," Smith said. Elliott, who finished 19th, maintained his lead as the Nationwide points leader. But Sadlers victory pulled him to just one point behind Elliott. David Ragan finished fourth and was followed by Sam Hornish Jr., making his first race since losing the Nationwide title by three points last season. Hornish has a seven-race deal with JGR and made his debut by winning the pole in Friday qualifying. Joe Nemechek was sixth and followed by J.J. Yeley, Landon Cassill, David Starr and Trevor Bayne.
