LONDON -- Englands gamble on Andros Townsend paid off as the winger capped an impressive debut by scoring in a 4-1 victory over Montenegro on Friday that kept the host in control of its pursuit of World Cup qualification.

Townsend picked up ball near halfway line and ran through the defence before sending a swerving shot in off the right hand post. The three points were no longer in doubt, and the gloss was put on the win by Sturridges penalty after the Liverpool striker was brought down. In Kharkiv, the only goal was scored by Andriy Yarmolenko in the 64th minute, ending Polands qualification hopes. The Ukraine winger curved a left-footed shot from the centre of the box after being left alone by the Polish defence who instead risked intercepting Yevhen Konopolyankas cross.
