CHICAGO -- The Cincinnati Reds dismissed pitching coach Mark Riggins on Monday, hoping to shake up a staff with the worst ERA in the majors.Riggins was in his first season after spending the previous four years as the organizations minor league pitching coordinator.But with a 5.51 ERA and a 30-53 record entering Mondays game against the major league-leading Chicago Cubs, the Reds decided to make changes. Assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach Mack Jenkins replaces Riggins. Triple-A Louisville pitching coach Ted Power will assume Jenkins role.President of baseball operations Walt Jocketty said he hopes Riggins will remain with the organization in some capacity. He credited Riggins for helping develop young pitchers in the minors but pointed to a lack of improvement at the major league level.We brought some guys up here probably before they were ready because we just didnt have a veteran, Jocketty said. We tried to acquire a veteran or two to stabilize the staff but werent successful. Part of the blame rests with us, the front office. We havent been able to find the right pieces.After dropping 98 games last season, the Reds are threatening the franchise record of 101 losses in 1982. They traded two key starters in former 20-game winner Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake last July. They then dealt closer Aroldis Chapman and All-Star Home Run Derby champion Todd Frazier during the offseason.The rotation has been hit with injuries this season, and Homer Bailey is recovering from Tommy John surgery last year.It feels like no rock has been unturned to help these guys turn it around, manager Bryan Price said. But at some point in time, the players have to perform. Weve been talking since spring training about seizing the opportunity and we need more guys to run with the opportunity. We have some really good arms, but we cant continue to watch these kind of performances.

She dumped her approach to the par-4 ninth hole into the front bunker. She failed to save par. The preshot smile became a wince. The heat was on. The hunter was being hunted.But the 20-year-old is stern, and over the next two and a half hours she proved it. Major championship golf is not meant to be straightforward -- she knows that better than most -- and she overcame the fears, the tensions and the stumbles.In doing so, she became the first player from Thailand, male or female, to win a major golf championship. But more than that, she may have taken the first step toward greater things. Do not be mistaken, Jutanugarn has the strength, the skill and the talent to challenge Lydia Ko at the top of the womens game. This may be her first major, but it is unlikely to be her last.Im very proud of myself, she said after winning the Ricoh Womens British Open by three strokes, finishing 16-under for the tournament. She made a brace of early birdies, never looked like making bogey and happily distracted herself watching aircrafts fly overhead, while her playing partner and nearest challenger Mirim Lee of Korea made two bogeys.When Lees approach to the ninth clipped a tree and dropped into trouble, Jutanugarn had a gilt-edged opportunity not only to extend her six-shot lead, but to rewrite the record books.She was 18-under par. Not only was the LPGAs record-low major score (19-under) under threat, but the mens record low of 20-under was in her sights, too.But from the middle of the fairway she caught her approach fat, and the ball slumped into a deep sand trap. The resulting bogey was only her second of the week. She saved par at the next, but visited sand twice in doing so.Just like Saturday, fretful approaches and tentative putts replaced her stellar early golf. The par-5 11th and short par-4 12th should have offered respite, but she parred them both while Lee used them to complete a hat trick of birdies.The Korean could not add to that on the par-4 13th, but she didnt need to. Jutanugarns drive took a wicked kick into the trees, her restricted approach scuttled through the green and she eventually carded a double bogey.The six-shot lead dwindled to one in just five holes. The pressure was telling. The preshot routine remained the same. The smile was in place, but it looked ever more forced; the mouth smiled, the eyes betrayed her nerves.Back in April,, Jutanugarn had held a two-shot lead with three holes of the ANA Inspiration to play.dddddddddddd She bogeyed each of them to lose, but insisted afterward, Actually its pretty good, it was only the last three holes that I regret. I got nervous, especially it being my first time leading. Ive got a lot of experience, learning how to play golf when youre really nervous. Next time its going to be so much fun to be there.The next time leading a major proved to be today, and while it may not have been fun (she insisted otherwise afterward), she had indisputably learned a lesson in the years first major. Further help came from caddie Peter Godfrey, an Englishman born less than an hour from the course. It is only their second week together, but a 14th-tee chat helped calm the nerves.The 16th and 17th holes proved crucial. Lee pulled her drive into trouble, hacked out of brambles, pitched to three feet and completed an outrageous par. Jutanugarn didnt blink in making a par of her own to maintain the one-shot advantage, and then her birdie putt on the next hole toppled over the front edge of the hole with its final rotation.A bogey on the final hole for the courageous Lee meant the final margin was three shots. The Korean was tied on 13-under with the equally brave Mo Martin, the 2014 champion, whose final round was a disciplined affair which reiterated her love affair with the tournament. Stacy Lewis closed with two late birdies to claim fourth on 11-under.The champion was unsurprisingly ecstatic. She was also pleased that she had discovered an inland venue this week, revealing it had been love at first sight. Actually, she admitted, I dont really like links courses. I think its too hard for me to win. When I saw this course, I thought, I really like this.She had banished the driver from her bag this week. Rather than being a one-off, it has actually been a theme of her year. She utilized the same tactic during her near miss in the ANA Inspiration, and the last time she carried the big stick was when winning the Kingsmill Championship in May. If Jutanugarn wants a motto for the year, it might be appropriate to rewrite the old golf maxim as, Drive for show, 2-iron for dough.When 30-year-old Brittany Lang triumphed in the U.S. Womens Open it was acclaimed as a victory for the older women. It was something of an exception however: Five of the last seven womens majors have been won by golfers aged 20 or younger. Moreover, 20 of the 22 winners this season have been 23 or younger.This may be Thailands first major victory, but it is the 23rd victory by an Asian golfer in the LPGAs last 46 majors. A Sprout Social report for the LPGA (Jan. 1 to July 29, 2016) revealed that Thailand is ranked second for LPGA Facebook fans, both in reach and engagement.
