导出博客文章BOULDER, Colo. -- When Colorado coach Tad Boyle draws up Xs and Os this season,
he will actually have X.Xavier Johnson, the do-everything player whos known
simply as X to his teammates, returns to the court after missing last season
with a torn left Achilles tendon. Hes one of four fifth-year seniors trying to
lead the Buffaloes to their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons. Not
just lead them there, either.Elite Eight, at least, said Johnson, whos 10 points
away from becoming the 33rd player in Buffaloes history to reach the 1,000-point
mark. I think we can do it, if we play together.Just dont mention such chatter
in front of Boyle. If I had to describe our team in one word, it would be
overrated, Boyle said. Were not consistent enough to be considered an upper-tier
Pac-12 team right now. Thats today, October whatever. Were a work in
progress.Under Boyle, the Buffaloes have gone from a team that rarely competed
for a conference title to one thats consistently near the top. His squad was
22-12 last season and returns an experienced nucleus in seniors Josh Fortune and
Wesley Gordon, along with junior George King and Dominique Collier. Not only
that, but Johnson is rounding back into top form and Derrick White, a Division
II All-American transfer from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, makes
his black-and-gold debut. But theres also this: Replacing Josh Scott, one of the
best big men in Buffs history. Can we replace his leadership? Im not sure of that
right now, Boyle said. The only way to find out is when adversity hits.Gordon is
raising his hand to be that quiet leader. And Johnson wants to be more of the
vocal director. Hes anxious to get going after tearing his Achilles while
working out in April 2015.Johnson nearly made it back before the end of last
season, but decided against it because, I didnt want to go out there and
half-step stuff and not play to my fullest.Things to know before Colorados
season opener against Sacramento State on Nov. 11:THE TRANSFER: Boyle isnt one
to typically hype up a player. With White, he made an exception. All I can say is
hes worth the price of admission, Boyle said.White scored 1,912 points and had
343 assists for Colorado-Colorado Springs, before transferring to Boulder and
sitting out last season. He made the switch to see what he could accomplish on
the Division I level. It was hard to leave the program that did everything for
me, White said. There are always doubters who say, `You cant play. You did a lot
at Division II but it was Division II. Prove those doubters wrong.THE
YOUNGSTERS: Colorado has five freshmen on the roster, including 6-foot-4 guard
Bryce Peters out of La Puente, California. He averaged 22 points his senior
year. The freshmen are certainly going to help us infuse some energy and talent,
Boyle said. But how much are they going to contribute? How many minutes are they
going to get? Were in a nice situation because we dont have to count on them,
but whatever they give us is almost like a B-12 shot in the arm.WEIGHT &
SEE: Johnson spent quite a bit of time in the weight room as he mended from his
torn Achilles. He went from benching 185 pounds 12 times before his injury to 19
reps of that same weight. It helped me get into a pro body so I can play against
bigger, stronger players, Johnson said.HUDDLE UP: In years past, the football
team was scuffling at this point and the talk around campus turned to hoops. Not
this season. The Buffs are competing for a Pac-12 title and that success on the
football field inspires the basketball players. Its exciting and makes us want to
do the same, said Collier, who led the team in assists and steals last
season.KING OF THE CORNER: King was voted the leagues most improved player after
leading the Pac-12 in 3-point percentage. He was 68 of 149 from behind the
3-point line.He is a good player. We all know that, Boyle said. Now, what does
it take to become a great player? Great players make those around them better.
Thats Georges challenge now.

Mo. -- Seattle has struggled to win on the road over the last month, losing 10
straight capped by a ninth-inning meltdown in the Mariners series-opener against
the Kansas City Royals. Some strong pitching and a bit of fortune helped them
break their long road skid Friday night.Hisashi Iwakuma pitched into the seventh
inning, Seattle scored the go-ahead runs on Yordano Venturas wild pitch and the
Mariners held on to beat the World Series champions 3-1 to even the four-game
set.Iwakuma (9-6) allowed one run, five hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings,
striking out six. He kept the Royals off balance with his usual herky-jerky
delivery, the only run he allowed coming on Cheslor Cuthberts base hit in the
fourth inning.Overall I was able to make good pitches, location-wise, and
execute when I needed to, change speeds, go back and forth, Iwakuma said through
an interpreter. Especially with the breaking ball I was able to go from strike
to ball and they were chasing those pitches and it made it very helpful from my
end.Steve Cishek, who blew the save the previous night, allowed Salvador Perezs
homer in the ninth before finishing off the inning. It was his 21st save of the
season.Yesterday was tough. I felt really good yesterday. Its just baseball, he
said. I wanted a chance to go back out there and, if I had the chance, give the
team the win to make up for it. It got a little sketchy there. I didnt think he
hit that that well, but, you know, I was able to finish it off.Ventura (6-6) was
nearly as stingy as Iwakuma, giving up only a sacrifice fly to Ketel Marte in
the fifth, before things unraveled for him after Seth Smiths single and Robinson
Canos double in the sixth.Nelson Cruz stepped to the plate and nearly gave
Seattle a three-run homer, sending a pitch soaring down the right-field line.
First base umpire CB Bucknor initially signaled home run, then signaled foul
ball, then decided that he wasnt quite sure and met with the rest of the
umpires.I lost it. I think that happened to the umpire, too, Cruz said. I had no
clue. After a review, tthe ball was declared foul and Nelson dug in
again.ddddddddddddhis time, Venturas pitch got past Perez and bounded away,
allowing Smith to score from third base and tie the game 1-all. Perez threw the
ball away trying to get him out at the plate, allowing Cano to also score -- the
star catcher was given an error on the play.I was pitching good up to that
point, I got two quick outs in that inning, Ventura said. I lost concentration
and got a little bit behind the count, gave up a couple of hits and then came
that play. The Mariners used three relievers to get the game to Cishek, who
bounced back from Perezs home run to retire Paulo Orlando and Cuthbert and help
snap Seattles road losing streak.Thats the beauty of baseball, Cishek said. You
play so many games that if you have a bad outing you have an opportunity to get
back out there the next night.HOME SWEET HOMERoyals manager Ned Yost has given
up trying to explain his clubs bizarre home-road split -- they began the day
28-11 at Kauffman Stadium, best in the majors, but are just 16-30 away from the
spacious ballpark. They average five runs at home and just over three on the
road. Its puzzling, Yost said, but theres not anything you can point to other
than were just not producing.TRAINERS ROOMFelix Hernandez will return July 20
against the White Sox. He is slated for a rehab start with Class-A Everett on
Sunday. When asked what directions he would give Hernandez upon his return,
manager Scott Servais replied: Go pitch. Have fun. Hernandez went on the DL on
June 1 with a right calf strain.UP NEXTRoyals RHP Edinson Volquez tries to
continue his dominance of Seattle when the teams continue their four-game set
Saturday. Volquez is 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA in six career starts against the
Mariners. Hell face Mariners LHP Wade Miley, who is 0-2 since his return from a
left shoulder injury. Miley is 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA against the Royals, throwing
a shutout against them on April 30.
