four-game losing streak that dated to mid-August.It also gave Seattle a
much-needed lift to start its final West Coast road trip. More importantly, it
helped keep the Mariners postseason hopes alive and inched manager Scott Servais
team closer to the second AL wild card spot.Iwakuma pitched into the seventh
inning to match his career high with the 15 wins, and the Mariners beat the
Oakland Athletics 3-2 on Friday night. We all fight and play to play in the
playoffs, Iwakuma said through an interpreter. As a starter I only pitch one
game every five days so being that day today you want to go out and give it all
you got. I was able to do that tonight.Nori Aoki and Mike Zunino homered and
Nelson Cruz added an RBI double to help the Mariners move within 3 1/2 games of
Baltimore and Detroit for the second wild card spot in the AL.Iwakuma (15-11)
allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings to snap a four-game losing streak and become
the third Japanese-born pitcher to have multiple 15-win seasons. Iwakuma, who
also had 15 wins in 2014, struck out five and walked one. From the first inning
he had all of his pitches working, Servais said. We got off to a pretty quick
start and we kind of faded offensively so we certainly needed the pitching
tonight. Everybody stepped up. It was nice to see.Aoki homered leading off the
third, Zunino in the seventh.Oaklands Bruce Maxwell had three hits including an
RBI double while rookie Joey Wendle singled twice. The loss eliminates the As
(60-80) from playoff contention, the earliest thats happened since 1997.Its also
the third time this season that Oakland has lost to Iwakuma.Just when you feel
like you have a beat on him . he makes big pitches when he has to, As manager
Bob Melvin said. He hasnt been perfect against us. Hes (allowed) a couple of
runs, they score more than that and he ends up winning.Robinson Cano drew a
two-out walk in the first and scored on Cruzs double following a 13-pitch at-bat
with As starter Daniel Mengden. Cruz fell behind 0-2, worked the count full and
fouled off six consecutive pitches before doubling off the wall in
right-center.Aoki hit his second home run of the season and first since May 28
on Mengdens first pitch in the third.Zunino homered off Daniel Coulombe leading
off the seventh. The As scored in the fifth on Wendles RBI single then pulled
within 3-2 when Maxwell doubled in Max Muncy in the seventh to chase Iwakuma.Dan
Altavilla and Steve Cishek combined to retire four batters for Seattle. Edwin
Diaz pitched the ninth for his 14th save.Mengden (1-7) got better as the game
progressed but still lost and is winless since June 27. Mengden allowed two runs
over five innings, walked two and struck out sixRARE COMPANYIwakuma joins Hideo
Nomo and Daisuke Matsuzaka as the only Japanese-born pitchers with multiple
15-win seasons. Nomo won 16 games three times for the Los Angeles Dodgers while
Matsuzaka won 15 in 2007 and 18 in 2008, both times with Boston. Overall I had
good life on my fastball, Iwakuma said. I was able to locate both my fastball
and my breaking pitches so I think that helped me a lot.INTO THE BOOKSZunino
became the ninth Mariner to reach double digits in home runs this season, tying
a club record. Seattle had done it four times previously, most recently in
2015.TRAINERS ROOMAthletics: Francisco Rodriguez underwent shoulder surgery

and Curtis Joseph. Pound-for-pound king Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez, who has won
world titles in three weight classes, will go for a belt in his fourth in his
next fight.Gonzalez, the reigning flyweight champion who has already won world
titles at strawweight and junior flyweight, will move up to 115 pounds and
challenge Carlos Cuadras for his junior bantamweight crown on Sept. 10 (HBO, 10
p.m. ET/PT) at The Forum in Inglewood, California, K2 Promotions announced on
Wednesday.Im very happy to challenge Carlos Cuadras for a world title in my
fourth weight class, Gonzalez said. Its an honor to return to fight at The Forum
in front of the great Los Angeles fight fans. The fight will be part of an HBO
split-site telecast on which K2 stablemate and unified middleweight titleholder
Gennady Golovkin will defend against welterweight titlist Kell Brook at the O2
Arena in London in a previously announced bout that will air live in the
afternoon in the United States. That night, HBO will have live coverage of
Cuadras-Gonzalez along with a replay of Golovkin-Brook.Cuadras will be fighting
in the United States for the second time but for the first time on television
and he said he is looking forward to it.I am excited to fight in the United
States for the first time on HBO and at the legendary Forum in front of the
great boxing fans in California, Cuadras said. Roman Gonzalez is a great
champion and I have a lot of respect for him. I will prepare myself to be in the
best condition of my boxing career to defend my WBC belt. The 29-year-old
Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KOs), the best fighter in Nicaraguas history other than his
mentor, friend and former trainer, the late Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello, has
struggled in recent fights to make the flyweight limit of 112 pounds. So after
making four successful flyweight title defenses, including tremendous knockout
performances against former world titleholders Brian Viloria and Edgar Sosa, he
is headed up in weight to take on the formidable Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 Kos).If
Gonzalez wins a title in a fourth weight class he will accomplish what Arguello
failed to do. Arguello, who had won world titles at featherweight, junior
lightweight and lighttweight, went for a title in a fourth weight class but got
knocked out by fellow Hall of Famer Aaron Pryor in the 14th round of their
legendary battle at the Orange Bowl in Miami in 1982.ddddddddddddrguello is such
a legend that if Chocolatito can surpass what his idol tried to accomplish, it
would be a huge statement for Roman and his career, K2 Promotions managing
director Tom Loeffler said. When we were discussing potential opponents for
Chocolatitos next fight, we went over a list of names and this fight seemed to
be the biggest fight he could get right now. But I think (surpassing Arguello)
played into his mind.If Gonzalez surpasses Arguellos feat, he will do so in an
arena important to both of their careers. Gonzalez is 2-0 at The Forum, where he
burst on the American scene by scoring a second-round knockout of Sosa in 2015.
Arguello fought four of his world title bouts at The Forum, including in 1974
when he knocked out fellow Hall of Famer Ruben Olivares in the 13th round to win
the featherweight crown. Were very excited to bring Roman back to the Fabulous
Forum in his first main event at the famed venue, Loeffler said. Roman has
proven with each fight why he is considered to be the No.1 pound-for-pound
fighter in the world.Challenging an undefeated champion in his fourth weight
class will be a great test for Roman and this battle against Cuadras will
provide the non-stop action fans have come to expect at his fights.?Cuadras, 27,
of Mexico, won the belt by eighth-round technical decision from Thailands
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in May 2014 and has made six successful defenses. His
first defense resulted in the lone blemish on his record, a fourth-round
technical draw against Jose Salgado in a fight that ended when an accidental
head clash cut Salgado and he was unable to continue.Cuadras is coming off an
eighth-round knockout of longtime Filipino contender Richie Mepranum on April
23, the same date as Gonzalezs lopsided decision win against McWilliams Arroyo
in his last defense, which was also at The Forum. ' ' '
