导出博客文章The Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals are ramping up talks about a
trade that would send star outfielder Andrew McCutchen to D.C., sources who have
spoken with both teams told ESPNs Jayson Stark.The Nationals, according to one
executive, were interested in making this deal Thursday, so they would be free
to nontender shortstop Danny Espinosa before Fridays tender deadline.If
McCutchen joins the Nationals, he would play center field, which would move Trea
Turner to shortstop and leave Espinosa without a position.Pittsburgh is
reportedly seeking a package that includes top prospects in exchange for the
30-year-old outfielder.McCutchen, 30, is signed through 2017, when he is owed
$14 million, and the Pirates hold a $14.5 million club option for 2018.The
center fielder is coming off his worst major league season, posting career lows
in batting average (.256), on-base percentage (.336) and slugging percentage
(.430). He also had 24 home runs and 79 RBIs.The 2013 National League MVP has a
.292 batting average, 175 home runs and 637 RBIs in his eight years in the
majors, all with the Pirates. McCutchen, a five-time All-Star, won a Gold Glove
in 2012.If the Pirates are able to trade McCutchen, their plan is to move
Starling Marte from left field to center field, according to multiple
reports.Espinosa, who made $2.875 million in 2016, is eligible for arbitration
if the Nationals tender the 29-year-old. If not, he would become a free agent
Friday.
