Charlie Whitehurst limped by with an elastic sleeve on his left knee.Two more
Browns quarterbacks are black, blue and beaten up.A day after Kessler and
Whitehurst were both injured in a 33-13 loss to the New England Patriots,
Clevelands quarterback situation was as messy and unclear as it has been in many
weeks.And around here, thats saying something.Kessler is recovering from a
painful injury to his chest and ribs when he was drilled by linebacker Donta
Hightower in the first quarter.But after X-rays on Kessler did not reveal any
breaks, Browns coach Hue Jackson said Monday theres a chance that the
third-round draft pick, who vaulted up the depth chart after Robert Griffin III
(shoulder) and Josh McCown (collarbone) were injured in the first two weeks,
will practice this week and play Sunday at Tennessee.Im sure its a pain
tolerance issue, every day is going to change, said Jackson, who has endured a
season full of hardship in his first season with Cleveland.It is today, it is
tomorrow and practice is Wednesday. We will see where he is then.Whitehurst may
not be as ready. After becoming the fifth quarterback to play in five games for
the Browns this season, he hyperextended his knee in the final minutes and is
listed day to day.For a change, though, its not all bad news for the
Browns.McCown has been cleared to practice and could be in uniform against the
Titans. The 37-year-old McCown wants to play after spending the past three weeks
watching his teammates come up short.Anytime you find yourself in a situation
like our team is where its gone this way and youre 0-5, I think its all hands on
deck, and youve got to want to help, he said. You watch tape from yesterday and
you watch the effort that guys put forth and theyre battling, and you just want
to be a part of it.Jackson may finally have more than one option this week.Well
have three guys standing out there (at practice), he quipped. So well be able to
pick somebody out of the group.At the rate Clevelands QBs are falling, it may be
hard to find a volunteer.McCown has been out since breaking his left collarbone
in Week 2 against Baltimore. He showed incredible toughness by playing three
quarters with the fracture, and less than a month later said its realistic hell
face the Titans.Yeah, Im going to practice Wednesday, and thats the next step to
this thing, he said. So well see how it plays out.But Im looking forward to that
part of it. When youre kind of going through what were going through, just to be
out there on the practice field and to get back moving around like that, its
exciting for me. And then well see where it goes. But Im looking forward to
helping any way I can and getting back out there with the guys.If Kessler and
McCown are both ready, Jacksons decision gets more complicated.Does he go with
Kessler, who has shown growth in three starts and could develop into the teams
long-term answer at QB? Or does he return to McCown, the steady veteran and
leader who has endeared himself to teammates and may give the Browns their best
chance to win?Jackson must wait to see how both players practice before he
decides.McCowns return to practice is a needed positive jolt for the young and
winless Browns, who until Sundays blowout have been in every game.Its big,
center John Greco said of the QBs return. I know Josh. Im sure he wanted to play
that following week.But now that hes got some rest itll be good to have his
leadership out there with us actually on the field. Hes out there as a vocal
leader, but his physical presence is huge for this team and if hes out there its

Jakob Silfverberg is making himself right at home with the Anaheim Ducks,

Clayton Kershaw last took the mound for Los Angeles, and whats happened in his
absence has been pretty encouraging for the Dodgers.Kershaws last appearance
came in a loss to Pittsburgh on June 26, and Los Angeles trailed San Francisco
by eight games in the NL West following that game. Since then, the Dodgers are
27-19 without their ace -- and they now lead the division by a half-game.
Kershaws herniated disk was the type of injury that could have derailed his
teams entire season, but the Dodgers have been able to withstand it so far.Were
right where we need to be in the race coming into September, manager Dave
Roberts said. I feel fortunate. Am I surprised? No. With the players we have in
that clubhouse, Im not. Our guys are focused on winning baseball games. Thats
what we need to do moving forward.Kershaw is 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA. He has 145
strikeouts and nine walks. Baseball-Reference.com ranks him No. 1 in the
National League in wins above replacement (WAR) this year, even though hes
thrown only 121 innings. Its hard to overstate what the Dodgers are losing by
not having him available.And yet Los Angeles never faded from postseason
contention. In fact, its the Giants who have been thoroughly mediocre for the
last couple months, squandering their division lead.For the Dodgers, rookie
shortstop Corey Seager leads an infield that also includes offensive threats
like Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez. The rotation clearly misses Kershaw --
not to mention Zack Greinke, who left as a free agent -- but Kenta Maeda has
been solid, and rookie Juilo Urias has made a contribution.If Kershaw does comme
back soon, it will be to a team thats in much better shape than the one he

base end Friday night. The last time Werth had failed to reach base was June 19,

eight games in the row and is now only 3 + games behind a wild card. Danny Duffy
won his 10th straight decision Sunday.Five of Kansas Citys eight wins in its
streak have come against last-place Minnesota, but the Royals also took three

Gurriel was called up from the minors by the Houston Astros on Sunday and
singled in his first big league at-bat. He finished 1 for 2 with a walk and a
groundout, although he left the game with hamstring tightness.The Astros have
high hopes for Gurriel, and fantasy owners will be pleased with the idea that he
could play multiple positions.LINE OF THE WEEKKris Bryant went 5 for 5 with two
homers and five RBI on Thursday to lead the Chicago Cubs over Milwaukee 9-6.
Bryant is second in the NL in homers and first in runs, and with the Cubs
running away with the NL Central, he should be a definite factor in the MVP
